La Joya, pronounced la-HOY-yah, means The Jewel in Spanish. Somehow in the towns early history, two ls replaced the y,so the spelling was changed to La JoLLa but the old pronunciation was retained. In any case, La Jolla as The Jewel describes the place perfectly and its a bit more elegant than the ancient slightly similar Native American name that loosely translates into the place full of holes, which probably had something to do with the towns many caves in its seaside cliffs.
