‘La Joya,’ pronounced ‘la-HOY-yah,’ means ‘The Jewel’ in Spanish. Somehow in the town’s early history, two ‘l’s’ replaced the ‘y,’so the spelling was changed to ‘La JoLLa’ but the old pronunciation was retained. In any case, ‘La Jolla’ as ‘The Jewel’ describes the place perfectly and it’s a bit more elegant than the ancient slightly similar Native American name that loosely translates into ‘the place full of holes,’ which probably had something to do with the town’s many caves in its seaside cliffs.

The cove is the jewel in the crown of the Ellen B. Scripps Memorial Park.

One of the best places in southern California for surfing big waves. A picture-perfect beach.
